Lesson Tips from the Pros!

          Posted by Matt Erger 2/12/09
Well since the last tip covered my favorite area of the game, I figure I might as well cover my second favorite part of the game….Putting.  I can still remember very clearly putting in our basement as a kid against my dad.  Not for money or any prizes just the thrill of beating my old man.  So the first tip is to make putting practice fun.  It gets boring very fast if you just go to the putting green and hit different putts with no meaning.  My favorite challenge on our putting green (closest to the clubhouse) is to play the six holes going in a circle around the green.  Par is 12 so I’m trying to 2 putt each hole or better.  This works on your long and short putts at the same time, and makes putting more fun, as you try to better your score each time you try this challenge.   Here are a couple putting set up tips to remember next time you practice your putting.
1. Your eyes need to be over the ball (flip a cd over and place the ball in the hole, with the mirror side showing you’ll be able to see if your eyes are over the ball or not).
2. Very little bend in your elbows (you may need to choke down on the grip a little).
3.  Make your practice stoke while looking at the cup to get a better idea how long a stroke you’ll need to make.
4. Use a slower rhythmic stroke with your follow through as long as your back stroke.
5. THINK SINK… be confident and visualize the ball going in!!

Most of the golfers that I have been blessed to work with on their full swings, tell me that they want to hit the ball longer and straighter, in summary…BE MUCH MORE CONSISTENT! The “good news” is that most of us can be taught and have the physical ability to set up like a “WORLD CLASS PLAYER”; something one must do to give himself (herself), the opportunity to hit a much higher percentage of consistently good shots in a row. The “bad news” is that it is very unnatural for most golfers to set up like a world class player and that most of the information we receive from watching and “self evaluating our own shots” is very counterintuitive.

Unfortunately, in order for one to set up like a world class player or to give oneself an opportunity to hit many more consistently good shots than presently, there are about ten somewhat boring initial world class starting position fundamentals that must be very consistently precise at each set-up!

Most of these ten would include proper: aim, ball position, head position in relation to the ball, posture, distance one is standing from the ball, width of stance, positioning of both feet, weight distribution from heel to toe, weight distribution to start from left to right, amount of arm and hand tension and of course one’s initial hold (“grip” sounds too tight for most of my students)! OBVIOUSLY, GETTING THOSE TEN STARTING FUNDAMENTALS CORRECT EVERYTIME IS EVEN CHALLENGING FOR TIGER WOODS, EVEN THOUGH HE’S LITERALLY BEEN A “GOLFING PROFESIONAL” SINCE HE WAS AGE TWO AND STILL TAKES LESSONS FROM HANK HANEY!

Therefore, yes, the choice is certainly yours and you can decide to take on the very challenging responsibility of learning this “world class starting or initial address position on your own.” However, if you want to greatly speed up the improvement process, the good news is that there are TEN PLUS PGA TEACHING PROFESSIONALS AT ONE OF OUR LOCAL CORRIDOR GOLF FACILITIES, THAT CAN HELP YOU LEARN AND REPEAT THAT “WORLD CLASS STARTING POSITION” THAT WILL EMPOWER YOU TO PLAY UP TO YOUR “GOD GIVEN GOLF POTENTIAL” SOONER; RATHER THAN LATER!
